軍事政権下のビルマで自宅軟禁中だった民主化運動指導者、アウン・サン・スーチー氏（65）が日本時間13日午後8時ころ、7年5カ月ぶりに解放された。
ちょうどそのころ、東京都豊島区で、「第62回ビルマ市民フォーラム（PFB）例会」が開催され、上智大学教授の根本敬氏が、「ビルマ総選挙はいかに？現地最新情勢の報告と解説」と題する講演を行った。
講演の中で根本氏は、ビルマで7日に実施された総選挙の解説に加え、今後に予想されるアウン・サン・スー・チー氏の行動やそれにともなう軍事政権の対応について語った。
