軍事政権下のビルマで自宅軟禁中だった民主化運動指導者、アウン・サン・スーチー氏（65）が日本時間13日午後8時ころ、7年5カ月ぶりに解放された。
スー・チー氏が解放される約6時間前、東京都品川区にあるビルマ大使館前では、在日ビルマ人ら約100人がスー・チー氏の解放を求める抗議集会を行った。

集会の後半、演説する在日ビルマ人のリーダーの隣でスー･チー氏の写真を掲げようとした参加者を警察官が制止し、現場は一時騒然となった。
ある在日ビルマ人は集会後、「スー・チー氏の写真だけはどうしても掲げたかった。私たちはスー・チー氏のためならいつでも命を投げ出す覚悟だ」と話した。
